Dr. Daniel Dettling

Title: Generation R and the future of work.

Abstract:

As digital transformation leads Industry and Work 4.0, ‘Generation R’ will grow up to experience robots and machines as welcome assistants, creating opportunities not threats. This talk suggested that instead of dark factories, people will be freer to focus on skilled roles within manufacturing.

Title: Global Economy - an outlook.

The world economy is in its 11th year of expansion. This talk focused on underlying growth trends, the current short-term outlook and hypothesized about where the challenges will be in the next recession.

Title: Decarbonization and Circular Economy: How will the new EU pieces of legislation impact the glass industry?

Abstract:

This talk focused on the two main legislative trends which could be real game-changers for the container glass industry, namely decarbonizing our economy and making it more circular. In particular, we explored the risks and the benefits of the new EU decarbonization strategy, the new Emission Trading Directive and the Circular Economy Package.

Title: Food Packaging and One Health: A look at the emerging science.

With the world’s attention increasingly on the effect plastic has on the environment, this talk focused on the effect it has on our food. How do chemicals in food packaging affect human health and the environment? And how are different stakeholders tackling the challenge?

Joan Marc Simon

CEO at Zero Waste.
Title: The role of glass in a zero waste economy.
Time: Day 2: 14:30 - 15:00
Abstract:

This talk focused on the zero waste philosophy, the necessity to work with safe and durable materials that do not use value when they undergo different cycles and the role that glass plays in the zero waste lifestyle. We also discussed the plastic pollution crisis and the role that glass can play in this respect as well as how should the economic incentives and EPR change in order to see glass gain share versus plastic.

Title: Sustainability for boutique brands - how glass makers should set up to service emerging sectors.

With manufacturing traditionally focused on larger volume brands, this talk explored how embracing challenger brands and emerging sectors will extend sustainability beyond the product and towards building an industry that caters and supports brands of all sizes.

Title: HEINEKEN’s view of sustainable packaging.

This talk considered Heineken’s Drop-the-C in packaging – a program aiming to lower their CO2 emissions. In particular, what Heineken and its consumers are looking for in terms of sustainable glass packaging solutions and sustainable glass production.

Alexander Sorg

Title: The future of glass melting caught in the crossfire of environmental policy and economics.

Abstract:

Covering the growing influence of environmental policy on the economy of glass making. Solutions will be discussed addressing the conflict between cost efficiency, flexibility in operation conditions and emission reductions in future. For the next furnace rebuild all of those aspects need to be considered to be prepared regarding all kind of potential developments in policy.

Title: The future of forming: How new technologies will impact the operation of glass plants.

With a focus on introducing automation to the forming & inspection process, we considered the balance today between robots and people within glass plants. What direction are we heading in – more automation or more staff? From trends to big data, this addressed the big issues.

Title: Traceability – opportunity or threat?

This technology-based talk highlighted traceability from the point of view of all stakeholders – bottle producers, bottle brokers, fillers, brand owners and end consumers. As traceability technology emerges, we investigated: How the industry leverages the opportunities? What are the inherent risks and responsibilities? Is this the breakthrough innovation that customers are waiting for?
